i9 Sports Flag Football Curriculum by Age:
Pee Wee (ages 4-6) – At this age, playing football on a team is a new skill and we strive to make the experience fun for all! Depending on the divisions, we have combined instructional practices or individual team practices where coaches work through basic to advanced drills. Our goal is to help our youngest players begin to understand the most important and fundamental flag football concepts such as:
a) End zones and out of bounds
b) How offensive positions work
c) Basic plays
d) Techniques to properly pull a flag belt
e) Strategies to run and throw a football
Players participate in an approximate 30 minute practice, followed by a 60 minute game with another team. During the game, everyone has opportunities to play different positions and make contact with the football. This helps players gain experience and learn about the basics of football. Our paid i9 instructors are also readily available to work with trained volunteer parents at any time to offer support, practice suggestions, and run drills if needed.
By the end of the season, pee wee players show improved passing, catching, and teamwork strategies. Most importantly, players in the Pee Wee Division learn that being a part of a team and playing flag football is FUN!
Junior (ages 7-9) & Senior (10 +) - At this age level, kids begin to play in more depth and our coaches are able to focus on more sophisticated skill development. Kids in this age group have a better grasp of the game of football, so there are few different rules in this division. More intricate passing plays are used and the defense is allowed to blitz. Depending on the divisions, we have combined instructional practices or individual team practices where coaches work through basic to advanced drills. In this division, we focus on teaching the following:
a) The role and purpose of offensive positions
b) More developed plays – passing the ball, not just handing off
c) Techniques to properly pull a flag belt
d) Strategies to run and throw a football with good form
e) More advanced rules for offense and defense
f) Offensive and defensive formations
Players participate in a 30 minute practice, followed by a 60 minute game with another team. During the game, everyone has opportunities to play different positions and make contact with the football. This helps players gain experience and learn about the importance of each position on a football team. Our paid i9 instructors are also readily available to work with trained volunteer parents at any time to offer support, practice suggestions, and run drills if needed.
By the end of the season, junior and senior players show improved throwing, passing, catching, and teamwork strategies. Most importantly, players in these divisions really begin to understand the game of football like never before!
At i9 Sports, we feel that having paid experienced instructors at every event is very important. This is unique to most other leagues. Our instructors come to every practice/game with a great deal of knowledge; not just about sports, but about kids. Many of our staff members teach elementary, middle, and/or high school in local school districts during the week and enjoy using their teaching experience on the weekends with i9 Sports. Other staff members have played sports at the college or professional levels and, still others, have worked with i9 Sports for so long that they know exactly the right strategy, drill, and/or technique to motivate any player.
Our AWESOME volunteer coaches are the “face of the teams!” They bring the teams together, help them practice, and are right there every step of the way during the season. Volunteer coaches are trained and background checked. They’re also provided with weekly, age-appropriate practice plans to make their coaching experience organized, fun, and stress-free! And, of course, volunteer coaches always have an experienced i9 Sports staff member nearby for support, if needed, during practices or game time.
Weather Cancellations: There is one weather make-up date built into the schedule. If we lose a weekend of games to weather, we will make them up on this date. Any additional dates lost may or may not be made up. We will do the best we can, but we cannot control the weather. Because of all of the costs built into running the leagues, we cannot provide refunds for dates missed. We will do all we can to make all the games happen.
